January Birthstone – Garnet
Garnet is a truly ancient gem, known thousands of years before the birth of Christ. It was formerly known as “carbuncle”. Although this term was generally applied to any red gem, now only red cabochon-cut garnets are called carbuncles. The word “garnet” has Latin roots, coming from “granatus”, meaning “like seeds” due to the similarity of garnets to pomegranate seeds.
Garnets were considered to have curative powers, especially against fevers. Those who wore garnets were said to be protected in their travels and kept healthy.
Garnets are not only red; they may be orange, yellow, brown, green, violet, purple, or have no color. Cut garnets can be very brilliant and show colors that look wonderful in sunlight and artificial light.
Come in and find the shade of garnet that suits you best.
