March Birthstone – Aquamarine
Aside from emeralds, aquamarine is the most prized of beryls. It is found primarily in Brazil, South West Africa, India, the Malagasy Republic and the former Soviet Union. Beryls that were the “color of the sea” were considered quite desirable in ancient times, but today deeper blue tones are in fashion.
It was believed to strengthen the kidneys, liver, spleen and thyroid. It was also thought that aquamarine would help ease depression and grief, and legend has it that to wear aquamarine in earrings would bring love and affection.
The color of aquamarine may vary from pale blue to a deep blue or blue-green. Greenish-yellow beryl can turn a blue color when heated.
