May Birthstone – Emerald
The Greeks dedicated emerald to the goddess Venus. Columbia is the best-known locality for emerald, although there are also some good emeralds in the former Soviet Union and other parts of South America and North Carolina.
Emerald is the symbol of immortality and faith. Some thought that gazing at emeralds was beneficial for one’s vision. Emeralds have been associated with the inconsistency of lovers due to the subtle change of color it can sometimes display. It is one of the rarest and most valuable gems.
Color varieties of beryl include emerald (green) and aquamarine (blue). Pure beryl is completely colorless. Chromium is what produces the green of emeralds.
It doesn’t take the Emerald City to impress her; an emerald ring will do just fine.
